Do hard things - Session 4 "A better way"
18th October 2009

"It makes me feel annoyed when I see low expectations in the media place on teens. I am more motivated to go against that." 16 year old at Do Hard Things
J.C Ryle "Youth is the seed-time of full age, the molding season in the little space of human life, the turning point in the history of man's mind."
As Alex and Brett Harris, the authors of the book "Do Hard Things " point out that in other words, what each of us will become later in life largely depends on what we become now.
Here are the headlines from session 4;
- We first looked at scripture with this great verse in 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 (Msg) You've all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You're after one that's gold eternally."
- We looked at the decisions a young person has to make and how to ensure it's a good launch pad for the rest of their lives.
For example: 14 years of age you need to make your GCSE choices 16 years of age you may take your A levels, go to College or find a job? 17 years of age you have to make your university choices 18 years of age you either leave Guernsey for university or you stay on the island and find a employment. Every young person needs to take these choices seriously and to ensure they have input from parents.
- In todays culture we often come across the message that you don't need to take on responsibility. In a Time magazine article about 'Kidults' (an american term for people in their 20's refusing to take on responsibility) it quoted the following; "This new period is a chance for young people to savour the pleasures of irresponsibility, search their souls and choose their life paths." This is a very sad message to send out.
"Do Hard Things has helped me realise how much more there is to life and doing hard things can make a difference." 15 year old member of the group
- In groups the young people then looked at an article from Guernsey's local paper about teenagers that are hanging out in gangs! To find out more, please copy this link and read it in full.

- Even the Guernsey Press quotes youngsters as being aged between 16 and 25 years old!
At the end of the evening we asked the young people to share with the team what their experiences of Do Hard Things so far has meant to them. The response has been incredible.
"Standing up for what I believe in during an R.S lesson, even though only one other person agrees! It has helped me to not feel ashamed of what I believe, even if the teacher thinks differently!" 15 year old member of the group
 Nathan introducing this evenings session
In groups the young people discussed the articles from the Guernsey Press
Don't stereotype us say teenagers, but what do they mean by they are just doing what teenagers do!?!
Do Hard Things is getting round the King's Centre, now even on the back of chairs!
As we take a break for a week for half term, I just want to add a huge thank you to the team at Do Hard Things, without a team this teaching series would have never began.
I can't wait for the 1st November!
